Bluebells By Gravestone

They (who they?) have replaced the signboard at St Edwards Church. The signage on the new one is not a patch on what the old one looked like in its heyday. See the old one here in its dilapidated state here.

Behind the new signboard I could see the felled logs that are still there in the churchyard. And then I saw bluebells. Leaning semi-precariously over the spike-topped low wall, I photographed these against the back of a gravestone.

Posting the photo here and looking for a title, I wondered whether it was a gravestone, a headstone, or a tombstone.

Internet to the rescue in the form of this that sounds OK to me.

The Terms “Headstone”, “Gravestone” & “Tombstone” used to have very different meanings that were clearly separate from one another. That is no longer the case now that time has seen all three terms evolve into the same meaning.

  2. They (the BlueBells & Ivy) are lovely against the Stone’s worn surface…. But I especially like the crack on the upper corner.
