Photographers Whose Work I Like

One of my favourite photographers is Henri Cartier-Bresson. I like the way he gets the near, middle, and far elements into his pictures so that the story unwinds in three-dimensions as your eye is led into what is, in reality, a flat plane.

And this next one is one of my favourites. It’s a border post between France and Belgium and the border guard is sweeping up. The contrast between this mundane act and the knowledge that this is a border between countries that makes the photo for me.

I like Werner Bischof’s photographs very much. I like them for the way he always made poetry – and often out of the most unexpected subjects:

I have enormous respect for Larry Burrows‘ photographs. This photograph from Vietnam must, by the nature of the events, have been taken as the scene unfolded. But the tableau looks like something that was created on a film set.
