I am using this post as a platform to encourage you to read an article I have just written elsewhere about the treatment of farm animals.
I wrote what I hope is a balanced and not ‘preachy’ article about this touchy subject, and what people can do (easily) with a bit of knowledge and by going to the ‘right’ supermarket.
It is aimed at readers in the UK because it mentions UK supermarkets at the end, but the message is universal.
I hope you take a look at the article – and please leave a comment there!

Thank you.
That’s sad..animals should be treated fairly and not abused..if people did that to other people..there would be an uproar..but because they’re animals that makes it better somehow.
That’s not fair! ;(

Or if they were pets. If people treated pet cats and dogs the way some farm animals are treated, there would be riots on the streets.

I once watched a documentary on TV, while I was still living in Sweden. It was right before we joined the E.U., so it must have been in the early 90’s. The film was about how animals, going to slaughter, were treated during the transportation. I’ve seen a lot of terrible things in my life, both on TV and otherwise, but this was the worst. I broke down, and that doesn’t happen easily. I just can’t describe the feeling of anger, frustration and whatnot… I hope it has improved.

Thank you for commenting. I am sure that the situation is improving – at least in some parts of the world.
However, there is the other side of the coin with the terrible results that come from ‘cleverer’ ways of breeding animals.
This was driven home to me after I published the article.
A vet that I know from the local Compassion In World Farming group sent me a photo of a ‘modern’ dairy cow.
Here is the link. What do you think? Dairy Cow.
And here is another link showing a modern dairy cow with mastitis.
I hope the photos don’t upset you.
I think there is a movement in public opinion towards the fairer treatment of animals. I see it as part of the ‘growing up and taking responsibility’ that perhaps has come from worries about global warming, declining animal and bird populations in the wild, environmental pollution problems, honeybee colony collapse disorder, etc.
So I think the movement is the ‘right’ way.

I hope so … they need to step back … respect living, breathing beings, otherwise it will come crashing down on us all.
