I spent some time in Israel, and there they call the ‘@’ sign strudel because it coils around like a strudel pastry.

With their guttural accents, strong retroflex ‘r’, and a slight ‘sh’ rather than ‘s’ at the beginning of the word, native Israelis make strudel sound particularly exotic.
