Verizon selling Tumblr to Automattic

Automattic is the company that owns WordPress.com. Automattic owns quite a few other things:

  • WordPress.com VIP
  • Jetpack
  • WooCommerce
  • VaultPress
  • Akismet
  • Longreads
  • Simplenote
  • Crowdsignal
  • Cloudup
  • Happy Tools
  • Gravatar
  • Atavist

Automattic does not own the self-hosted version of WordPress that is found at WordPress.org. That is held in a kind of trust for the benefit of everyone and will always be free.

So now Automattic is buying Tumblr. What will it mean for Tumblr and for the people who already have Tumblr accounts (like me)?

    Tumblr I’ve totally lost the grip of … hadn’t thought of it in several years. Could be interesting to see what WordPress will do with it.
