Sidney Sussex College was founded on St. Valentine’s Day in 1596 by legacy of Lady Frances Sidney, Countess of Sussex.
I pass the college regularly, and now I have to appreciate for a moment that it has been in existence 525 years.
That knowledge that the college is old is part of what caused me to want to take the photo – the contrast between the man and the surroundings against which he is leaning. Is he drawing sustenance from the gateway? Is he aware of the building at all? These are things we shall never know. They are lost in the mists of time.
