Bound To The Desk

Desk is an offline blogging editor for Mac like MarsEdit or Bloggo. You can save your work locally (as you can with MarsEdit) or via iCloud Drive.

It also has a Preview window (as does MarsEdit), and a style editor that hovers whenever you highlight text.

Here’s an example of what I mean about the style editor, although I am not sure how the image is going to show on the page.

It was very easy to get the image onto the page – just drag and drop. Of course, I sized the image beforehand.

The reason I am not sure how the image is going to show on the page is because images doen’t have align left/center/right attributes as far as I can see. I can drag the image around on the page, but that doesn’t tell me where it will actually end up on the blog.

No, I am wrong – now that I have played with this image a bit more I see that when I highlight it, another little style popup appears, as you see here.

Desk uses Markdown and you can style text with the usual Mac keystrokes, such as Cmd+B for bold text. But can I also use the usual Markdown keystrokes directly? Let’s try with bold, which I am doing with two asterisks before and two after the text.

And the answer is that yes you can – as I can see in the Preview window.

Desk exports to various publishing platforms – WordPress, Blogger, Tumblr, FaceBook – and I have set this up to publish to either of two WordPress blogs.

Let’s find out now how to choose the blog to which I want it to export and publish…

See you on the other side.

So that worked and now I want to update the post. I had a bit of difficulty figuring out how to do that. On my first attempt it simply repeated the post and published it as a fresh post. Now I see how to do it – easier to do than to explain.

Now the question is how I feel about using Desk versus using MarsEdit

I have absolutely no issues with MarsEdit. I have used it for years and it is excellent. So why am I bothering with Desk – and the answer is that it is pretty, and distraction-free, and fun.

Second Update

I think that there’s a potential problem with this app which is that it’s easy to format text in a way that one doesn’t intend.

What I mean is that with MarsEdit for example, one can see the HTML formatting so it’s easy to avoid messing up and including a bit of formatting code inadvertently.

But with Desk, it’s comparatively easy to – for example – delete a bit of text and run into a section that has already been formatted. I did this with a link and ended up turning an extra sentence into part of the link anchor text.

I had exactly this problem with Bloggo, which I didn’t get on with at all.

Another thing – and it’s not a big thing but it’s a different way of working compared to MarsEdit, is that once a post is published one no longer works with the local version.

Instead, one works with the version that is pulled down from the server – and to get to it, you need to pull it from the sidebar.

The tempation when I turn on the app is to use the version that is presented. But that’s the local version and if I have already updated the post once or more already, then the local verison and the version on the server will be out of sync.

It’s just something else to remember.
