In my last post, I mentioned the Olympus 14-42mm kit lens I had used in London and said that the lens wasn’t up to the standard of the 45mm lens.
To give you an idea of how the 45mm performs, here is a full frame of a photo I took with it.
I have marked a 600x400px rectangle on it that shows the position of the crop you can see.

I have a Nikon 50 mm that I love using. I read an article where the writer was say he got better results with the 50 mm and cropping than with using a telephoto. It looks like you have come to the same conclusion.

Thanks for your comment, Pat. I have a 70-300mm on my Nikon that I use for photographing birds and animals. It is a VR (vibration reduction) lens and does a good job. But for portraits like for example, these street photos from the Edinburgh Fringe, I use the 50mm like you. It gets near enough 🙂

I also like the 70-300 with VR, and I use a monopod. Adds just a little more stability but very maneuverable. I have some weakness in my arms so not as stable as I could be.
