Iran: Lion And Sun

Before we went into the National Gallery to see the Pointillist exhibition, I stopped at a demonstration outside against the current regime in Iran.

The demonstrators were singing or shouting a verse and response calling for the end of the current regime. If I heard it correctly, they were calling for the return of the Shah.

The Lion and Sun emblem against ground of green, white, and red horizontal stripes is the historical flag of Iran used until the 1979 revolution.

After the 1979 revolution, the Lion and Sun symbol was replaced by the current emblem of Iran.

I read that the Lion and Sun lag is still commonly used by Iranian nationalists and opposition groups to the current government, like here.

Here’s a previous article about a protest by Iranian nationalists outside the National Gallery.
