Weathered Gravestone

The graveyard near St John’s Wood High Street has only old graves. The painter John Sell Cotman, who died in 1842, is buried there. Samuel Godley, who fought at the Battle of Waterloo, and died in 1832 is also buried there.

The sandstone gravestones do not wear well. Acidic rain weathers them. Freezing rain gets in the cracks and flakes pieces off. The names fade and the letters become hard to read. And none more so that this gravestone.
