Lying In

This is the General Lying-in Hospital on York Road in London, built for women to rest before and after giving birth. It opened in 1767 and closed in 1971.

Lying-in is an archaic term meaning the extended period before and after a woman gives birth when it was recommended that she rests in bed.

Lying In

There are different types of lying in.

There is Lying in state, such as happened with Queen Elizabeth II, where the bodies of deceased Heads of State are laid out publicly for people to pay their last respects,

And there is Lying in Repose, which is the term for the public display of bodies of the heads of the Catholic Church such as with the recently deceased Pope Francis.
