Ukraine Protest, London

This is a protest against the Russian invasion of Ukraine. It took place outside the Russian Embassy in London today, at the entrance to Palace Court off the Bayswater Road opposite Kensington Gardens.

The road was cordoned off and the protesters stood behind the barriers, with police controlling any overspill into Bayswater Road.

From the attitude of the police, they must have thought this was a civilised protest, and they were pretty relaxed.

What will become of Ukraine? The competing narratives on the origin of the invasion are mostly about who promised what to whom about NATO expansion.

What was promised is one thing. That time has moved on is another. After the demise of the USSR, the newly independent nations do not want decisions made over their heads.

I too protest the invasion of Ukraine because the very fact that the country is fighting says that it does not want Russian control.

In a way, the statements by President Trump are echoes of the early nineties, when superpowers did indeed feel they could decide the fate of small nations over their heads.

Except that Ukraine has not folded, and Russia is not finding it easy to force the peace it wants. What does Trump want in return for pulling Putin out of a hole?

Putin chose a career in the Federal Security Service. It is more than possible that he at least sat in on the interrogation of suspected persons. What does that say about him? He seems to have ordered the assassination of political opponents. How do you negotiate with him?
