No More ‘Like’ In The Back End

Before you read this, it’s not world shatteringly important. But if you run a WP.com website then you will have recently received a notification from WP telling you that they have changed the way the Comments section is handled.

Before the change, if you were in the Admin panel in the back end and wanted to ‘like’ a comment then you would not see that option if you clicked ‘Comments’ in the left sidebar (highlighted in red in the image above).

But if you clicked on ‘Manage Comments’ in the right panel (highlighted in blue in the image above) then with each comment you would see an option to ‘like’ a comment by clicking on the little star.

Maybe you noticed this and used this feature?

All Change

Yesterday I looked and I could no longer see that in ‘Manage Comments’. Clicking it takes me back to the same page as clicking ‘Comments’ in the left sidebar.

If you as a site owner want to like a comment you have to go to the front end and like it there by clicking the little star, as I did here.

I Asked Support

I asked Support if I remembered it correctly, and received this reply:

Hello,

I’m following up on your report regarding the missing “Like” button on the Comments management page. Thank you for reaching out about this!

You are correct that the “Like” button was available in the previous interface, but it is absent in the current one.

We have recently updated our dashboard as part of an ongoing multi-year project aimed at bringing WordPress.com closer to a “core” WordPress experience. You may have already noticed significant changes to our navigation and settings over the past nine months, and this update is an extension of that work.

I understand that having the ability to click the “Like” button on comments through the dashboard is convenient, and we appreciate your feedback. I have passed this feedback on to our relevant team. I cannot guarantee the outcome but it will certainly be considered.

Personally it took me long enough to find the ‘like’ option and now I know I remembered correctly that it was there – I want it back.

  1. So much for Calypso it seems. I mean, if we were already able to select which interface (WP Admin or “Default”/Calypso) in our site’s General Settings, why this? ¯_(ツ)_/¯

    1. Thanks, I hadn’t seen it in those terms because I never had a clear picture of the difference between WP-admin and Calypso until now.
