No Going Back From A Block Theme

There is no going back if you are using a non-Block theme that WP has discontinued. And Glen, the theme I am using, is not a Block theme and has been discontinued.

So if I switch, there is no going back. That raises the question of what theme to move to – and the Twenty Twenty-Five theme seems to fit the bill.

It shows big wide images and the typeface is very readable. It uses featured images, but if you omit a featured image it does not leave a blank space but rather it omits the space. Good.

The downside will be the stuff like built-in links in the navigation. I am not a fan of full site editing for two reasons. The first is that I just follow my nose to find what I want to change. So I don’t have a metacognitive view of how it al hangs together.

The second reason I am not a fan is that once you commit (save and save) a change you can’t go back. I have deleted sections in error when messing about with Block themes in the past. Full site editing is changing and I think in the annual State Of The Word talk, Matt Mullenweg said that it will change more in 2025.

The Photograph

The photo is of three coachmen resting between rides in a horse-drawn carriage in Seville. I like the way the man talking is indicating with his right hand, relaxed with people with whom he is comfortable.

I will take a screenshot of this as the Glen them shows it and then ‘pull the trigger’ on the new theme.

  1. If Glen still works for you, you aren’t “required” to switch themes. Other than the theme being retired, is there another reason you wish to change themes?

    1. You are right, no requirement to stop using a non-Block theme. Part of me wants to commit to FSE and although I have been using it on test sites, there is nothing like something I care about to galvanise my brain. The other reason is that Glen might get forcibly retired at some point. Twenty Twenty-Five is a departure compared to the very opinionated 24, 23, etc themes and the first one that I think could make a nice site.
