The Deciduous Dawn Redwood

Brown leaves on Dawn Redwood in the grounds of the Botanic Garden in Cambridge

Conifers have leaves like needles or scales, and they produce cones containing seeds. And almost all species of conifers are evergreen,

There are a few deciduous conifers. The larch is the most common deciduous conifer in England.

The Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) is deciduous. The one in the Cambridge University Botanic Garden is around twenty-five metres (80 feet) tall.

It has grown fast since it was planted in 1949. It can grow to twice that height in its native to China, where it is endangered.

Here, a week later is the whole of the tree and a close up of the base.
