At Last A Good View Of The Magnolia Grandiflora

The problem is that the flowers are at all heights, and when lower ones open I happen not to be at the Botanic Garden. When I am next there they have faded. But now a low flower only a touch past its very super-best best.

I was there with a friend and we considered what the petal arrangement was. It took a few moments for me to see the three smaller petals, and then the three bigger petals behind. Close up they are fleshy rather than delicate.

    Lovely! Is it fragrant?

    1. It has a slight, elusive fragrance on the cusp between sweet and pungent.

  2. Three sets of threes, how interesting David – and it does take a bit to discern the pattern and seems even harder to hold onto once you’ve looked away! Perhaps t’would be easier to see in person?
The strange thing about their petals is in spite of the apparent fleshiness, Magnolia petals are very easily damaged and oxidise at the drop of a hat – very much like the browning of an apple’s flesh…

    1. Absolutely right, the petals seem so substantial – especially these – and yet the flowers turn so quickly -and after all that effort.
