The Piano

I have never thought deeply about the shape of piano legs. I can see how the top of the leg has to support the substantial weight of the structure. Therefore the top of the leg should have a big cross section to spread the load.

Also, I can see that for easy moving across floors the bottom of the leg that touches the floor should be on castors.

And maybe the tapering of the leg could be to save weight.

But I wonder whether the tapering is also to reduce the transmission of sound from the piano to the ground rather than to the air?
