Hm, I clicketh to embiggen the image, but all it did for me was to open it in a separate overlay, which shrunk the image to the vertical size of my browser window.

Mmmm…. And did you clicketh the image that opened up in the new browser window? And if so, with what effect?

It closed the overlay.

More hmmmm…. This clicking business came from a suggestion from WP when I was placing the image. When a block is highlighted, the sidebar has sections for Alt text, then resolution, and then there is a slider I never used before that says ‘Expand on click’
Do you have that in your Admin section?

Yes, I do and the “Expand on Click” feature was recently fixed after being broken for about a month. But I have to wonder how useful it would be if the image being clicked is actually inserted very large to begin with.
