More or less just past Mill Lane and Laundress Green, the River Cam splits in two and then rejoins. The river runs north-south, and the eastern branch is higher by several feet.
Yesterday the river was very high, so the sluice gates were opened to allow water to flow into the other channel.
And here is the video I took.
A few minutes later I spoke to a woman who works at Scudamore’s Punting, asking her if the river was particularly high in her experience,
She said the river was about a foot higher than the highest it normally reaches and they were closing early for the day.
The current was so strong that even experienced punters were finding it a battle to manoeuvre in the river, as I could see.
