
As I have written before, the flowers on this tree are big compared to most others that we see in the UK at about 12cm ( 4 3/4 inches). Magnolia Grandiflora is native to the South-Western United States, so it is used to a warmer climate and flowers in Spring there. Here we are in Cambridge in the UK at 52• N and it is flowering in August.
By the time it flattens out in a day or two it will be much bigger and it will lost its creamy colour and be white. And then very quickly – within a day or two – it will start to will.
Look at the flower head just to the left below this flower – it is the remains of another flower that has had its day.
