Cleaning Google Reader

I cleaned up my Google RSS Reader list. I subscribed to around 130 sites, and that’s a number I have built up over a period of about five years.

I have the sites in two folders within Reader: One folder is named ‘Travel Bloggers’ and the other is named ‘Everything Else’.

Making folders makes it easy to collapse on group of sites and concentrate on the other.

How Many Posts

What I saw was typical of whenever I look at Reader – Jon Gruber at Daring Fireball has posted a zillion posts and most of the others have posted a handful.

Cleaning Google Reader

This is not the first time I have been through Reader and cleaned out some sites from Google Reader. I don’t recall exactly when I did it last, but it was more than a year ago.

To explain – I didn’t clean out the sites because I was no longer interested in them: I cleaned them out because they were not being updated. Some had not posted since January 2012.

This time around, I unsubscribed from around 25 websites – mostly within the ‘Everything Else’ folder.

Some were well-established sites with, I would guess, a large readership – and they stopped.

So, hello 2013 – and here’s to all of us who continue.

To purge is to make room for new so I hope you find new sites that spark your interest in 2013

    Hi David,
Hmmm … I think I just felt a poke to get with the clean-up program myself. I need to stop procrastinating and do the same thing. In fact I need to do a clean-up of my email accounts and my WordPress.com Reader too, for the same reason you cite.

I’m so glad we met online and want to wish you an excellent new year.

I don’t use Google Reader … or any reader. Tried so many times, but just cant pick up the habit. My WP blogs I’m following, I get as email and I’ve made a label for them [skip inbox]. I feel okay with that.
    Happy New Year :)
